YELLOWING BAHIA: Our company maintains bahiagrass
in the common areas of a condominium. The turf is showing conspicuous yellow patches, as
it does every spring. Fertilizing doesn't help. What's wrong?-Miami
ANSWER: Temporary yellowing of bahiagrass occurs during any surge of
growth. It is a widely noticed spring phenomenon of bahiagrass. Dr. George Snyder, Soil
Chemistry Professor, has noticed that these yellow patches have lagging root initiation,
while adjacent green patches have abundant new roots. Delayed rooting would be consistent
with the lack of response to soil-applied fertilizers. Temporary spring yellowing of
bahiagrass usually corrects itself within a few weeks. If the problem persists, you might
have a lack of available iron in the soil, due to high pH. If that is the case, try
applying a foliar iron source or try lowering the soil pH.
